She fills the walls of this character with the adventures of a beautiful, loving multi-racial family. One of my favorite parts of Karina Yan Glaser’s writing is that she makes the brownstone building a character in the story. Biederman more and more, the Vanderbeeker kids learn that their landlord isn’t as he seems. The five kids decide that this won’t do, and they proceed to concoct a plan to convince Mr. ![]() ![]() The historic brownstone building in Harlem is the only home the kiddos have ever known. ![]() We meet the Vanderbeeker family five days before Christmas, as the kids are informed that their mysterious landlord “the Beiderman” won’t be renewing their lease. If you’ve been looking for books reminiscent of The Hobbit and Chronicles of Narnia, in that they have content appropriate for your 4-year-old but engaging enough for your 9-year-old, The Vanderbeekers of 141 st Street might be the perfect add to your collection this holiday weekend. It is not an easy task to find read-aloud books for the entire family. ![]()
